This City is a mirror smashed. It slowly falls, A galaxy of brilliant shards: Ruins of unearthly splendor. And I can only watch, suspended In a state of  breathless shock, as beauty, Grace, and wisdom bounce against the floor To lie in dully shining heaps, Their sheen besmirched by that strange stain That men call progress. A tower stretching to the sky Will always fall. The plans of those Who built a City (carved of glass that might reflect Their high and noble dreams) Cannot outlast the broken mirror lying At my feet. I see roads like twisted threads Running through a tarnished hub: Dirt and grease of time have slowly weighed The gold and silver frame until it tipped And spilled refracted dreams. An empty shell remains and daily grows More empty: no gold cloaks these roads, Only threads of bruised and dirty paper, Fog and ashes, smearing, blearing, Staining filaments of glass: Ghostly windows quote the mirror Falling in a silver crash. I feel stone beneath my fingers, Faded, cracked and beaten, worn As fragmented and shattered glass, Hanging in the endless now Between splendor and oblivion. The pavement smashed beneath my feet Is sinking slowly, ground to silver dust With the endless feet of iron, Once was carved of silent marble, Now littered with the noise of dirt and paint As loud as blood between my hands, Floating shards of glass. I hear life and death and living, Strained and ripped by fractured dreams; Drowning echoes of true music. Once the mirror was not cracked, But silent, hearing its own image answer back The song of gold and silver fountains, Congealed dreams of greater men. Voices call, motors rumble, shadows squeal- Round me rings the mirror cracked. This City is a mirror smashed Beneath the will of lesser men. As stars are lit when day burns out, They say that hope will rise again. The only stars that I can see   Are shards of glass, all bleeding light Against the graves of greater men.
My entry for :iconanothercontestgroup:'s 'Tales of Time' contest (fav.me/d5qa3lt ). The theme was to create pieces, ' inspired by the 'tales of time' this can be any form of art inspired by stories through out time everything from nursery rhymes, legendary trilogy, classic novels, songs that tell stories, games, tv, movies, or generally anything action, adventure, fantasy, romance and such forth.' I chose one of the oldest stories in all of literature and legend - the Fall: the idea of a perfect, or near perfect thing (people, places, things...)falling into the ordinary, everyday state that is life as we know it, but still maintaining an echo of that higher state. I chose to represent it through a city.
